Canvas / leaves

featuring senora robinson

produced by Derrick thomas

Canvas was inspired by one of the first slam poems I wrote about a painting as a metaphor for life. The song is combined with Leaves, which marks a change in seasons.

Lyrics

hook/chorus

I never thought that we'd be walking down this road,

I just really hope you know that you are never all alone

I left a promise to grow, but we lost control,

And I guess that I know is the corner of your heart, and so

If all of our tomorrow's start slipping away

Can I borrow your heart for a minute today

I'm caught holding on even if it'll change

But I've still got some stories and these pictures I paint

Picture I paint

verse

Woke up this morning with all of my thoughts in pieces

It honestly lost meaning, I think I forgot the reason

But the world's a painting I hope you don't stop believing

You can walk like Michelangelo, Picasso when you're speaking

And every paintings got a damaged space you can't escape

I can't relate to thinking that it's ruined if you can't erase

A mix of colors and flaws is what I am today

But look into the future I promise you'll see the canvas blank

I know this isn't what I think it is

I used to think the simple things could fix a sinking ship

I take this world and I grip it inside my fingertips

Just so I can sit and paint the best of it until it slips

If nothing else I'm taking taking these walls down,

I'm tracing the constellations, I'm painting the stars now

All of our faults found, you basically walked out

But I'll be hear waiting just painting my heart out, and I know

Hook/chorus

There's open miles of broken smiles along this road

But I'll take your heart of gold and hold it while it starts to snow

There's not a lot to show for when your problems domino

A pen and pad and lots of hope is all my pockets hold

So if tomorrow's all just a flip of a page

Can I borrow your heart for a minute today

We're caught shooting for starts that keep slipping away

But let me show you life through the pictures I paint.

Go

Verse

You're an unfinished painting I can't wait to view

You're a collection of everything great in you

I paint the highs, I paint the lows, I paint the truth

I paint the sky, I paint to love the way you do

I paint my faith and I promise I'll paint your happiness

I'll find the magic in moments that haven't happened yet

Put every single color of your paint palette in

soon we'll create balance with everything that we've battled with

You'll always have this canvas right in front of you

I'll always manage to love enough to paint something new

No matter what we do just know that there's enough for you

I won't watch you fumble with your paintbrush while it doesn't move

Life it beautiful paint it so they can see it

I make it the basic reason I wake up to face my demons

I'm chasing the changing seasons, you fade with no trace of meaning

But I'll be here waiting just painting what I believe in, but still

Hook/chorus

I always think about all that your drawings hold

The leaves have changed and they've fallen across this road

But all I know is what's beautiful often goes

And our hearts have got to grow, but I haven't lost this hope

If our tomorrows just a flip of a page

Can I borrow your heart for a minute today

I said if our tomorrow starts slipping away

Then I'll borrow your heart for the picture I paint

Leaves

poem

The leaves started to change yesterday

And I don't know why you told them to

My heart keeps reaching for something else to say

But it gets caught up in all of our moments of June

But you decided that you needed your seasons to change

And I'm trying to see the reason they do

You told the sun to keep its shine hidden away

You told the leaves to change and leave the tree that they knew

The leaves had all changed when I looked yesterday

And I don't know why you told them to

Do I cut the tree down by its roots today

To build the bridge that I need to get over you?

Because you decided that you needed your seasons to change

And I'm starting to believe that the reason is true

You told the sun to keep its shine hidden away

You told the leaves to change and fall off

Now we'll see as they do.

song

Walk up to your house and tell my mouth insert sound

And I can't even get a couple words out

Because every step we take was just to learn how

To walk bridges that were built up to burn down

Don't let me leave these dreams inside the world's crowd

Eyes closed, arms up, feet earthbound

Our roads are curved I won't concern myself with first doubts

They're overturned, I wrote these words, I notice what they're worth now.

Outro

Autumn walked in with a broken jagged promise

Broken roots bleed until the leaves start to see the red

The leaves fell and hit the ground like a car horn in the busy street

Reminding me, there will be green ahead.
